Aurora have won both of their 2026 meetings with G2 so far — 2-0 at ESL Pro League Season 23 in March, then 2-0 again at the IEM Cologne Major in June. But the roster that won those two series barely exists anymore. MAJ3R stepped down as IGL on July 2, citing family reasons, and was followed out the door by soulfly days later. Aurora completed a rebuild on July 8 around kyxsan — who led Team Falcons to the PGL Bucharest 2025 title before being benched ahead of the IEM Cologne Major — and rifler Jimpphat. Only XANTARES, woxic and Wicadia remain from the side that beat G2 twice.
G2, by contrast, have made exactly one change since their last loss to Aurora: SunPayus was benched on June 25 in favor of r1nkle, a signing G2 coach sAw described as needing someone "more aggressive" at AWP, while acknowledging r1nkle still has positioning and overpeeks to "iron out." huNter-, MATYS, NertZ and HeavyGod are all unchanged. In practice, that means Aurora's 2-0, 2-0 head-to-head record was built by a lineup that no longer takes the server, while G2 arrive with the same core that lost both of those series.
Both Eliminated By the Same Team, a Day Apart

The Winner Walks Into the Reigning Champions
Whoever wins this opener advances to the Group A upper-bracket semifinal later the same day against the winner of Spirit vs. DENDELE — and Spirit enter Porto as the reigning Esports World Cup 2026 champions, having beaten FUT 3-1 in that tournament's grand final just three days earlier.
