G2 vs. Spirit at BLAST Open Porto 2026:A Cologne Rematch
G2 and Spirit meet again in Group A's upper semifinal — two months after Spirit eliminated this same core roster from the IEM Cologne Major, with one change on G2's side since.

G2 and Spirit meet in Group A's upper-bracket semifinal at BLAST Open Porto 2026 on August 28, with a direct spot in the playoff semifinals on the line. Both arrive off straightforward openers — G2 beat Aurora 2-0, Spirit beat DENDELE 2-0 — but neither result tells you much about how this specific pairing tends to go.
Two months ago, at the IEM Cologne Major, this exact matchup happened on a much bigger stage. Spirit won. It was the fourth time in five 2026 meetings that they had.

The Cologne Rematch
On June 19, Spirit eliminated G2 from the IEM Cologne Major in the quarter-final, 2-1. G2 took the opening map, Overpass, 13-9, before Spirit closed it out on Dust2 and a deciding map. Spirit went on to lose to Falcons in the semi-final; G2's run ended there.
Spirit's side of that match is identical to the one they field here — sh1ro, magixx, tN1R, donk and zont1x, unchanged since. G2's is one name different.
One Change Since the Last Loss
The G2 that lost in Cologne played SunPayus at AWP. Since then, G2 signed r1nkle — off a roughly two-month spell on Ninjas in Pyjamas' bench — with coach sAw saying at the time that the team needed "someone more aggressive" in that role. Everyone else — huNter-, MATYS, NertZ, HeavyGod — was already on the server for the Cologne loss and still is now.
r1nkle's form since arriving has trended up: a series-high 1.31 rating in G2's Esports World Cup win over Astralis on August 19 was his best LAN showing with the team so far. Asked about the move afterward, he told HLTV: "I'm very happy to play on this team and on the stage. G2 have a lot of really good fans. I'm enjoying it. Life is good." Whether one changed piece is enough to flip a rematch Spirit have otherwise dominated is the actual question this match answers.
A Streak Spirit Are Chasing
Spirit arrive on a seven-match win streak, HLTV's own tag for their current run — one that includes beating FUT 3-1 in the Esports World Cup 2026 grand final on August 23, five days before this match. The head-to-head with G2 over the past 12 months reads 7-1 in series, 15-5 in maps; across all of 2026 it's 7-3. G2's only win in that stretch was over a year ago.
Spirit's current lineup — magixx back at IGL, zont1x back from a personal-reasons break, tN1R signed from HEROIC — has been settled since mid-December 2025, longer than most of the field's rosters. Consistency, not a rebuild, is the story on their side of this one.
What's on the Line
The winner advances directly to Group A's upper final on August 31 and a guaranteed spot in the playoff semifinals. The loser isn't eliminated — BLAST's Group A is double-elimination — but drops into the lower bracket on August 30 and has to win out from there just to reach the playoffs at all. For G2, losing again would mean a third straight defeat to this same core Spirit roster; for Spirit, winning would extend a streak that's now eight matches deep since their last loss.
