History
The History of M249 Skins
The M249 is a light machine gun with a massive magazine, offering suppressing fire at the cost of mobility. There are 26 M249 skins on the site, spanning 4 rarity tiers from Restricted down to Consumer.
From Arms Deal to today
Weapon skins were introduced to Counter-Strike with CS:GO's Arms Deal update in August 2013, which brought Cases, the Steam Community Market, and the first tradable weapon finishes to the game. The earliest M249 finish with a confirmed release date tracked on CS2Owl is M249 | Blizzard Marbleized from Office, released on August 14, 2013. Since then, the M249 skin lineup has grown to 26 skins, with 12 available in StatTrak™ versions and all 26 currently available as Souvenir editions.
Simple finishes to complex designs
Early finishes were plain, single-pattern designs. Later Cases introduced layered, custom-illustrated artwork and textured finishes, expanding what a weapon skin could look like well beyond a solid color or simple camo.
When Valve relaunched the game as Counter-Strike 2 on September 27, 2023, every existing M249 finish carried over unchanged onto the new engine, and new finishes have kept releasing through CS2's own Cases and Collections since.
