B8 vs. Spirit at EWC 2026:The Giant Killer's Next Test

B8 arrived at the Esports World Cup as one of 32 teams nobody was watching closely. Then they beat Vitality. Now the Ukrainian side faces an even bigger name in the Round of 16 — a Team Spirit side that reached the semi-finals of the last Major.

B8 and Team Spirit meet in the Round of 16 at the Esports World Cup 2026 on August 20. The Ukrainian side arrive off the back of the tournament's biggest upset so far; Spirit arrive off the back of a semi-final run at the last Major.

The two teams have played once before, at ESL Pro League Season 23 in March — Spirit won. That result says little about where either side stands now.

The Upset That Got Them Here

B8 reached these playoffs by beating Vitality 2-1 in the group stage — a result described at the time as the biggest upset of the tournament. Vitality won the opening map, Mirage, 16-12, and looked in control of the second, building a 9-3 lead on Inferno. B8 clawed back from there, took the map, and closed out the series 13-5 on Dust2.

That win is the reason B8 are a name outside Ukraine right now. It is also the only real data point anyone has on how they perform against a team this good.

A Different Kind of Test

Vitality came into their match with B8 in the middle of a rough stretch. Spirit don't carry that same baggage. They reached the semi-finals of the IEM Cologne Major, beating G2 in overtime along the way, before losing a close series to Falcons — the team that went on to win the whole tournament. Anubis went to Falcons 16-14, Spirit took Mirage 13-8, and Falcons closed it out 16-12 on Dust2.

In other words: B8's last signature win came against a team that wasn't playing like itself. Spirit are.

donk, and a Team Rebuilt Around Its IGL

Danil "donk" Kryshkovets remains the most dangerous individual factor Spirit bring into any match — his 2.27 rating across Stage 2 in Cologne was one of the most dominant single-stage performances at a Major in recent memory.

Around him, Spirit have changed how they play since Boris "magixx" Vorobyev took over as in-game leader. Their flash-assist rate has nearly doubled compared to the previous two years, putting them among the best in the world by that measure. Donk has been blunt about what that shift requires from the rest of the roster: "We have to shut the f**k up and let him call."

B8 have no real scouting history against this specific version of Spirit — which cuts both ways.

How Far Does the Run Go?

By ranking alone, this is one of the more lopsided matchups of the Round of 16 — Spirit sit among the very best teams left in the field, B8 much further down the list. But the list didn't predict what happened to Vitality either.

A win would make B8 the story of the tournament's first week. A loss would still leave them with the win over Vitality — proof the run wasn't a fluke, whatever happens next.
