On August 13, Aurora and M80 played an elimination match in the Esports World Cup 2026 group stage — Aurora won it comfortably, 13-9 on Inferno and 13-9 on Dust2, prompting HLTV's own recap to read simply "Aurora romp past M80 in EWC elimination match." Mason "Lake" Sanderson admitted afterward that the loss came down to individual mistakes rather than strategy: "It's much more micro than macro; it's not any of the strategies' fault. We're kind of blanking in key moments." He also pointed to consecutive last-place finishes at BLAST Bounty Season 2 and that Esports World Cup as the low point of M80's season, with assistant coach Luca "Munstur" Ioanițiu (who joined August 11) brought in to help fix it.
Both lineups arrive at this rematch completely unchanged. M80's Opening Round win over Natus Vincere — a genuine upset, 2-1 as the No. 40 side in the world against the No. 6 — suggests the fixes are taking hold. Aurora, meanwhile, needed a bounce-back win of their own over DENDELE just to get here after an Opening Round collapse against G2. Whichever way this goes, it's the identical matchup from three weeks ago, with higher stakes attached.
An International Roster Still Finding Its Footing
Aurora's current five only came together this summer. Jimpphat arrived from MOUZ after more than four years there, and kyxsan joined from Falcons — where he led the team to a PGL Bucharest title as in-game leader before being benched for karrigan ahead of the IEM Cologne Major. Paired with new coach Ashley "ash" Battye, the international five debuted online at BLAST Bounty Season 2 on July 21. Özgür "woxic" Eker spoke candidly about the adjustment in an HLTV interview after Aurora clinched EWC 2026 playoffs: "It was kind of hard at the first days, but right now after like one and a half months... we just get used to speaking English." He credited kyxsan's in-round callouts for building his confidence to play a more aggressive, space-creating style.
That project has had a bumpy start at BLAST Open Porto — HLTV's recap of the Opening Round loss to G2 noted Aurora "fumbled a 12-7 lead" on the deciding map, a collapse against a rebuilt G2 sniper role built around Artem "r1nkle" Moroz. Beating DENDELE to survive the Lower Round showed the new pieces can still win when it matters — beating the team that eliminated them from the last event would be a bigger marker of progress.
What's on the Line
The loser's tournament ends here. The winner moves on to Group A's Lower Final on August 31, where they'll face whoever comes out of G2 vs. Natus Vincere, the tournament's other Group A Lower Round 2 match. That Lower Final winner becomes Group A's third playoff qualifier and travels to Porto for the September 4 quarter-finals — still two more series away for either Aurora or M80, but the first of those two is right in front of them.
